What are Cannabis Dabs?
Dabs are also known as wax, shatter, butane hash oil, budder and many other names in different parts of the world.
All these names refer to the waxy substance that is obtained from cannabis flowers via different methods. The end result is a waxy substance that has a high concentration of cannabinoids, such as THC or/and CBD.
Dabs need to be heated to extract the highly concentrated cannabinoids.
Traditionally dabbing was done using a blowtorch to heat a surface of a banger or a nail.
Heating surfaces like those comes with its own challenges. Most importantly the danger of burning yourself or someone around you.
Since wax pens arrived on the market, this process is a lot easier. The danger of burning yourself is almost completely eliminated.
What does a Dab Pen do?
Wax pens utilize a so called ‘atmozer’ to heat the cannabis wax so it turns into vapor.
These atomizers are attached to a battery, often via a 510 thread.
This combination results in a dab pen. You simply press a button and the battery heats up the atomizer. All you have to do is inhale the vapor.

There are differences between the battery capacity, design, atomizer technology and more. Some wax pens even come with optional water bubbler.
What are the alternatives to Wax Pens?
Apart from heating a banger with a jet lighter or blowtorch, there are also electronic nails or e-nails.
They come in different shapes and sizes. Some of them are plugged into the power supply, while others can be operated from a battery.
These later ones give you some portability, however not as much as a wax pen. A pen style vape is significantly more discreet than an e-nail.
